Large parts of East Africa are facing the worst food crisis of the 21st Century. Over 12 million people are facing starvation. Children are in most danger, with infant malnutrition rates soaring in recent weeks. Akiru Lotege and her children live in Turkana, one of Kenya’s worst affected regions. Her family have been hit hard: “The longest we have gone without food is four days. On the fifth day the children couldn’t even stand up. When we are hungry like this it is hard to sleep. The children cry all night. I kiss them and rock them and try to lull them to sleep.”
